She is excited to be part of Summer at the Hidden Cafe’s “Still We Rise!” which presents a wide array of musical sets in their program.

Charlotte has received top prizes in many competitions, including the Vancouver International Music Competition and San Jose International Piano Competition and has been featured in the Live From Here variety show with Chris Thile aired on NPR, performing at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco. Gamelan Sekar Jaya – Gender Wayang

Music for the Balinese shadow puppet theater (wayang) is provided by four musicians playing ten-keyed gender—one of Bali’s most technically challenging yet rewarding instruments. Because of its role in dramatic accompaniment, music for the Gender Wayang ensemble is wide ranging both in mood and character.

“Nguad” is the newest composition by our gifted artist-in-residence and Guest Music Director, Ni Nyoman Srayamurtikanti. It means “expansion,” referring to Srayamurtikanti’s experience of living in the United States for the past nine months and growing in perspective, creative output, and more. This four-part piece, while taking inspiration from traditional gender wayang repertoire, delights with unusual and creative time signatures, chords, tempo changes, and power.

Gamelan Sekar Jaya (GSJ) fosters artistic exchange between Bali and the United States through residencies, workshops, performances, and the creation of innovative new works for music and dance. Founded in 1979, the company is based in the San Francisco Bay Area and specializes in the performing arts of Bali. GSJ has been called “the finest Balinese gamelan outside of Indonesia” by Indonesia’s Tempo Magazine, and the group has performed in venues ranging from New York’s Symphony Space to LA’s Hollywood Bowl to remote village squares in Bali.
